Thank you for binging this personal moral dilemma to the table. I have stuggled with the same issue working as a community health worker in New Orleans. Very much the same story- ethnically white community health worker trying to work on the issues of local black community. It's a big knot of issues, I spent three years trying to justify what I am doing, and at the end, I couldn't keep up. The face of poverty is there, you don't need to look far to find it and take pictures, yet as you pointed out, this is just one small piece of the story. I chose to step out from the non profit complex, yet I think that's just personal solution, not a solution towards moving forward together with the communities we try to ally with.
Thanks again, would be interesting to keep all this in focus, as we should always i suppose.

The term "poverty pimp" was first used by (African American) Congressman JC Watts and (many believe) directed at Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, whom he accused of inflaming the anger and fear of the inner city to further their own careers. However, after vicious media attacks Congressman Watts backtracked and stated he didn't have any particular person in mind when he made the statement.

But "poverty pimp's" as identified in the article are alive and well. Sadly, many of them hold positions on arts or culture Commissions or other Boards that play middle-man in dispensing government grants. Many Board members or Commissioners have a dual role as a grant receiver, or other private profession such as "Consultant" that allows them to make money from their role on the Commission.

It's a shame, but I guess that any time "people" are involved, there will be corruption. Even the best of causes get corrupted once the rats see the opportunity for self gain.

Dear Max,

Thank you SO very much for this article. As someone who is dedicating my summer, and probably a large portion of the rest of my life, to work in the non-profit sector, I really need this.

I have recently been questioning the efficacity of organizations who, by nature, have to turn communities into statistics in order to secure funding for projects. However, it has been a struggle to come up with alternatives.

Thanks again,

Jaime

To apply you must be a patient of the <a href="http://www.childrenshospitaloakland.org/healthcare/depts/weight_management_healthy_hearts.asp" rel="nofollow">Healthy Hearts Clinic at Children's Hospital</a>. If you are a patient, you can ask for an application at the clinic.
